Someone may ask you, which are the languages that Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Colombia and Argentinashare in common? Answering the question might not be easy particularly if you have not read thehistory of people living in those countries. Spanish is just one of the several languages found in theregion. Quechua is the second largest language and 8-10 million individuals in the Andes region ofSouth America use it as their main language. Even more, it is the most common language among theindigenous Americans.

First, what is Quechua?

Also called runa simi, or the “people’s language”, Quechua is not a single language – it consists of 46languages deduced from one ancestral language. The languages are native to central Andes region(Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, Ecuador) and it is currently the official language of Ecuador,Bolivia and Peru. The number of native speakers stands at 8 million and although people write itusing the Latin writing system, it has remained one of the key languages spoken in the world.
